Top Tips for Successful Studying

We got some questions regarding top tips for successful studying and so decided to highlight some Top Tips for Successful Study Results in an article. For those of you at university, school, or studying for some form of professional qualification, we hope these top tips for successful studying comes in handy.

1) Give yourself enough time to study
First on the list of tops tips for successful studying is when studying, don’t leave it until the very last minute. Some students appear to thrive on last-minute cramming for exams. However, it’s usually accepted that for the majority of us this is not the best way to approach exams. To help plan out your time management, create a timetable for study. Write down a list of the exams you have and the schedule on which you have to sit them. Once you have your exam schedule, plan your study accordingly. You will probably want to give certain exams more study time than others, so try and find the balance that works for you.

2) Arrange the study space you use
Try to ensure you have enough space to spread out your books and notes. Is there enough light? Is your chair comfortable enough? Are your distracting computer games out of sight? Remove any distractions plus make sure you feel as comfortable and can focus as much as possible. For some individuals, no distractions may mean almost complete silence, but for others, some background music might help. Some people need everything totally tidy and organized before they can concentrate, but others enjoy a more cluttered environment. Take time to think what works for your study and take time to get it right.

3) Flow charts and diagrams
A large number of people find visual aids can be really helpful when revising. At the start of the topic you are studying, challenge yourself to write down everything you already know about the subject – this will highlight where knowledge gaps lie. When its near to the exam, shorten your revision notes into just one-page diagrams. Putting your knowledge down in this brief format can then help to quickly recall knowledge you require during the exam.

4) Practice with old past exams
Another top tips for successful studying results is to practice taking past exams. Old exams will help you get familiar with the format of the questions, and can also be useful practice to make sure you spend the right amount of time on each exam section. Another top tip is to explain your exam answers to other people. Use family to explain answers to questions and see if you make sense. Explaining answers will help you to get the exam content clear in your mind. Explaining answers will also highlight areas you need more work.

5) Organize study groups with friends
Try and get together with some friends for a study group. You might have questions that friends have the answers to and vice versa. When meeting friends make sure you stay focused on the study topic for an agreed amount of time.

6) Take breaks regularly
Another of the top tips for successful studying list is not to over study. It might seem like it’s good to study for as many hours as possible; however, this can be counterproductive. As an example, if you were in training for a marathon then you wouldn’t try and run 24 hours a day. Similar to a marathon, studies have shown that for long-term retention of knowledge, taking regular rests from study really does help. Every person is different so develop a routine that works for you. You might study better in the morning so start early before taking a break at lunchtime. If you are more productive at night, then take a longer break earlier on in the day so you are ready to study more down come evening.

7) Snack on some brain food
What you decide to snack on at exam time can really have an impact on energy levels and focus. Try and keep away from junk food as this will impact productivity. Ensure you keep your body and brain energized by picking nutritious foods that have been proven to help with concentration and memory. Examples of these foods are fish, nuts, seeds, yogurt and blueberries. You should take the same approach on exam day and eat a good meal before the test, based on foods that will provide a slow release of energy throughout. Sugar may seem appealing, but your energy levels will crash an hour later.

8) Plan your exam day
Try and prepare everything well in advance of your exams. Avoid leaving it to the day before and then suddenly realize you don’t know what you’re supposed to bring or the way to the exam location. Get familiar with the exam rules and requirements of the exam and plan your route and trip time. Do a test run of the trip to the exam location if you are really unsure but if you can’t, then write down clear directions. Add extra time once you’ve found how long it takes to get to the exam as traffic or something unexpected could always come up. You don’t want to arrive at the exam having had to run there and as a result feel frazzled from losing your way. You could also make plans to travel to the exam with friends or classmates, as long as you know they’re likely to be punctual.

9)Drink lots of water
Last on the list of Top Tips for Successful Studying is to remember that being well hydrated can be essential for your brain to work at peak performance. Ensure you keep drinking lots of water throughout your revision, and also on the exam day.
